down the memory lane

simply being sincere

In my childhood I used to meet a boy from our neighbouring village during  grazing our cattles on open crop fields after the harvest. He also used to collect cowdung which i did not require to do.He used those for using as fuel.He was a son of a share cropper, and I was from a family of marginal farmer.Casteism still prevailed there though in subdued forms, still we used to engage in long coversations and playing,as both of us  shared more or less  the rcommon economic background there remained nothing which could prohibit us from becoming friend. He was more extrovert and articulate than me.There were other several cow boys along with us,but most of them were working for others in exchange of money and food. Our days in the cattle field going fine.after some years his father decided to send him to his maternal uncle. He was not willing to leave his village,he cried a lot,but was not in a position to disobey his parents. After some days he began to reside with his maternal uncle at a village a few kilometers away from ours. His maternal uncle was a postman of his local village post office and used to suffer from some chronic ailments and required to stay indoor for several days in a month. He had been doing the jobs of his uncle as proxy, and sideby side attending a school near by.This way his uncle secured his two times meal and stay. One thing he was having was his sincereness which I was not having. He used to deliver letters to the villagers of same village and adjoining villages. He was never late in delivery of letters,he used to give other postal services to the villagers,He gained huge popularity among the villagers. This way he completed his schooling and took admission in college and became graduate in pass course as in our time the education was almost free.Still he was doing the same job ie working as proxy of his uncle. His uncle has to retire from his service for ataining the required age limit. He became unemployed.and his hardtime started. He did not give up,he did not come back to grazing field with his cattles and the bucket for collecting cowdung.During his college life though he could not come out brightly he came to know some job avenues. With the help of his friends and some relatives he collected many books. He made intensive studies for one year and appeared for IAS exam and astonishingly came out with flying colours by getting selected as a police Officer, now he is working in high position in West Bengal police with out any blemishes,He neither  let his uprightness to go down nor he openly criticised his superiors,he did not revolt, even under the tremendous pressure of  the rulling party who politicised everything.
